Although, this segment is pretty new for the Indians and there are not many vehicles available currently but it has got enormous potential. Not only outside but also inside the cabin, the crossover gets some of the flabbergasting comfort and convenience features. Toyota has kept an eye on the fuel economy, especially, as it plays a pivotal role in deciding the fate of a vehicle in India. Toyota Etios Cross Exteriors
Etios Cross is the third cross to enter Indian shores after similar styled Fabia and Polo. While the Polo is the smartest looking hatch and Fabia can still make way with its international styling, the Etios Liva unfortunately has nothing to boast of.Plastic claddings, aluminum finished bash plates and a bold name, this is the perfect recipe for a crossover hatchback. Toyota has done the same with Etios Cross. The front face has a handle bar moustache looking grille. Turn indicators have been clubbed with fog lamps. It also gets a skid plate positioned below the front bumper. The hood gets a strong rib section flowing in the middle.
Diamond cut 15″ alloy wheels on the Etios Cross is standard. The new alloy wheels have made the ground clearance rise by 4mm. The wheelbase has been retained whereas the overall dimensions have grown cause of the matte plastic claddings all over. The electrically adjustable ORVMs also get turn indicators. Unlike the Cross Polo, which just gets a sticker, this one gets its name etched on the plastic cladding. It also gets contrasting silver roof rails.
It gets a roof mounted spoiler and the name Etios Cross written in bold on the rear tail gate. Similar to the skid plate on the front bumper, the rear too gets one. Toyota has launched the Etios Cross in 8 different colors. Personally, a yellow would have done for me but then my choice among the different shades would be the Orange and Blue. Even though it is supposed to be an adventurous looking car, it does not come across as an attractive looking car. The brand perception won’t change unless these cars get a complete makeover.
Toyota Etios Cross Interiors
Etios Cross interiors are done in a plush piano black theme, matching to the door arm-rests. The sporty seats are done in fabric with stitch while the front seats also displaying the ‘Etios Cross’ badging. Although, the wheelbase is lesser than that of Etios sedan but despite that it comfortably accommodates five people with ample spaciousness and adequate knee room. The ergonomic seats with an added functionality of adjustable front and rear headrests enhance the comfort during long journeys. Also, the height adjustable driver’s seat proves to be handy during such voyages. Toyota Etios Cross Transmission
Under the hood of the new Etios Cross it’s the same old story. The new Etios Cross gets three engines options which are also available with the Etios Liva hatch, the engine options includes a 1.2 Liter and 1.5 Liter Petrol which produces 80 PS of peak power at 5600 rpm and 104Nm of torque at 3100 rpm and 90 PS of peak power at 5600rpm and 132Nm of torque at 3000rpm respectively. While the only diesel mill available with the Etios Cross generates 68PS at 3800rpm and 170Nm of torque at 1800-2400rpm. All the engines are mated to a 5 speed manual transmission and there is no option for an automatic gearbox.
All this engines are the same unit which is available with the Etios Liva hatch and thus driving characteristics of both this cars will also be the same. Toyota claims that the engines are extremely fuel efficient and fun to drive. Etios Cross has been fitted with MacPherson Strut at its front and Torsion Beam at its rear. The Etios Cross is little heavier than the standard Etios Liva hatch which will help in providing a more comfortable and planted ride. But we particularly will suggest you not to even think of taking it for some serious offroading because this car only looks tough with an increased ground clearance while on the inside it is the same Etios Liva hatch.
Toyota Etios Cross Driving
Toyota Etios Cross handling is a bit off mark at high speeds but it is decent in city driving, courtesy the 3-spoke leather wrapped electric power steering with tilt function. The audio controls find a place on it too, so that the driver can comfortably set the volume according to his desire. As for performance, the company hasn’t tweaked or tinkered the all three engines; so it is a good performer spontaneously. The 1.5L petrol engine propels the crossover touch the 100kmph mark from standstill in a mere 11 seconds while clocking 160kmph as top speed. The other petrol engine, the 1.2L, achieves the 0-100kmph in a comparatively larger time span due to less powerful and mileage oriented. Precisely, it touches the 100kmph from standstill in 14 seconds along with a top speed of 150kmph. The 1.4L diesel mill focuses more on fuel efficiency and hence, lacks behind the petrol models by a fair margin. It crosses 100kmph barrier from standstill in 18 seconds and measuring top speed as 160kmph.
Toyota Etios Cross Safety
Toyota India has incorporated a highly efficient and effective braking system in the Etios Cross in which front brakes are ventilated disc brakes while the rear brakes being drum brakes. This braking system works exceptionally well in accordance with the Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution. Toyota Etios Cross Final Thought
Toyota Etios Cross doesn’t seem to be a crossover; in fact, it’s the Liva with added features and better interiors. Well, such models haven’t worked out in India before too, going by the dismal performance of Skoda Fabia Scout and Volkswagen Cross Polo. Overseeing it, Toyota Kirloskar Motors (KTM) has played a big gamble in the form of Etios Cross and in order to justify its step and receive optimum response, the company needs to market it aggressively. The price is also bit off, seeing the features available.
