Hyundai Creta Overview
Hyundai Brazil has recently teased the Brazilian spec Creta on their website. The reports state that the compact SUV will be unveiled at the 2016 Sao Paolo Auto show which will commence from November onward.The Creta was already launched in the Indian market and India is also the first market to use the ‘Creta’ nameplate as well. In India, the compact SUV is quite popular and is made available with both petrol as well as diesel drivetrains under its hood. Quite honestly the Creta with its loaded exterior and interior not only gives some tough competition to the Renault Duster but also to the Mahindra XUV500 which is priced slightly higher than the SUV.. As far as the Brazilian spec Creta is concerned this compact SUV will be manufactured at Piracicaba plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After it’s unveiling in November the car will go on sale in the Brazilian market early 2017. However the reason why we are interested in this particular SUV is because of the fact that this will also make it to the Indian market as well sometimes in mid-2017 as a facelift model. Hyundai Creta Exteriors
In terms of design, the Creta sports Version 2 of the Fluidic design language. The hexagonal bonnet grille with three, broad chrome slats and the peeled back headlamps are easily identifiable as the Hyundai design standard. The Creta is based on Hyundai’s ix25 and its design is fundamentally SUV than the i20 Active, the stylised variant on the i20. The Creta has been built on what Hyundai calls the Hive Structure, a light-weight body that uses quite a bit of high tensile steel. The Creta’s stance is more upright and the proportions are ideal to deliver on the compact SUV promise that it will attempt to fulfill.
A large bumper with extended cladding over the front fender is made to seem like a bull-bar and a simulated underguard below gives the Creta’s front a fairly aggressive look. The headlamps feature a LED strip and large fog lamps add more character to the vehicle. The floating roof is the other design element that is sure to catch your eye in the Creta’s design. The blacked out A-pillar and the rising beltline brings up the rear of the vehicle making it look larger than it really is.
At the rear, the individual elements seem like a mash of design inspiration from many of Hyundai’s other models. But, it falls in place nicely, and gives it a fairly strong rear design too. The thick C-pillar is a bit of an obstruction for driver visibility, but contributes to the strength of the rear design. On the contrary, the A-pillar is relatively thin, improving visibility at the front blind-spot area.
The tail-lamps are large units with their overall design matching the headlamps. The tail-gate has been designed to curve out and cut deep into the rear bumper. Boot loading height is quite low and like in the front, there is a simulated underguard in the rear fender too. The body side cladding is not unnecessarily bulky, but the wheel arches are pronounced and proportionate, helping the Creta still sport a squat stance on the road.

Let’s get started with the most prominent change inside i.e. sunroof. Hyundai too has followed other manufacturer’s suite to throw in a sunroof for more comfort and convenience. While some may feel that the Indian climate conditions are not compatible with this feature, there is no denying that sunroof is a wow factor inside a car. But it’s a typical electric sunroof and nothing special to say about it, however, the big benefit remains that it gives airy feel inside the cabin.
Mainly in this update, Hyundai has resorted to ‘don’t fix if ain’t broken’ approach. Ingress and egress is quite easy since the vehicle doesn’t sit up too high from the surface. The only few things that get into the way of entering a bit tricky, especially for the senior citizen, is the side thick sills. And once you get inside, you get into a world in which you see a balance in style and sensibility. The space is something which will divide opinions, but it’s neither splendid not generous. The car might look wide from outside, but it isn’t the same from inside. However, the tall roofline lends it a more spacious feel. Once you hop on to the front seat you will see that the seating position of the car is quite high which could be unsettling for many drivers. While the driving person can’t see the edge of the hood, the high-set branch gives the person extra dose of confidence during heavy traffic. As far as steering is concerned, it still comes only with tilt adjustability but the good thing is that it has been set at a natural distance from the dashboard which should not be a problem. This time around in terms of tech and features, Hyundai seems to be a bit conservative. The main additions in this facelift are sunroof and powered driver seat. Other minor changes include auto-dimming IRVM, wearable key known as ‘H-Band’ and a wireless phone charger. Where the smart band seems to be a nice touch, the charging pad for smartphone might be problematic as it draws power from the current 12V socket placed in the dashboard. So, in this case you can’t use your own charger, for that you have the USB port available.
There are some misses as against the expectations. Features such as automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, and ventilated seats have been conspicuously omitted. It’s not like this will break the buying decision, but these features are certainly feel-good ones that anyone wants if he or she is spending Rs. 16 lakh. However, the car comes loaded with plethora of other comfort aspect which every Creta lover will appreciate. These include steering mounted controls, automatic AC with rear ac vents, cruise control, smart key with push start button, follow me headlamps, electric tailgate release, front USB charger, front and rear power outlet and electrically adjustable/foldable ORVM.
Though the screen size of the infotainment system remains the same, it now gets updated software from the Verna. The infotainment is absolutely user-friendly and sleek to operate. And as usual, it comes powered by Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink while the connectivity option remains the same with USB, Bluetooth and Aux-in functionality. The decibels are powered by sound system provided by Arkamys with 4 speakers and 2 tweeters. The infotainment also comes equipped with Auto Link Connected Car technology and Hyundai i-Blue audio remote application.
The instrument cluster features the same design as before and the dials are also carried forward in this version. However, the multi-information display (MID) has been updated and now sports the same function as that in new Verna. That means the digital fuel plus temperature gauge can now be seen inside the dials. In terms of spacing and storage, the compact SUV offers good headroom, legroom, shoulder and knee room while the seats are supportive enough even of the large frames. Two six-footers can sit one behind the other with ease while the shoulder room at the rear is average. However, three adults can sit at the rear but with slightly tight-situation. So, Creta is a good 4-seater for longer journeys.
In terms of storage, it is one of the practically laid out cabin we have seen in Hyundai cars with cup holders available in between the front passengers, under arm storage at the front, door bins which can house 1L of bottle each, rear seat armrest with cup holders and sunglass holder. Moreover, the rear seat can be folded down to extend the 402L boot space further. Overall, the Creta mostly remain the same save some additional comfort features.

As Hyundai hasn’t touched the engine as there was little need for that, you will not notice much difference in terms of performance. Talking about the diesel engine, there are two options the 1.6L 4-cylinder CRDi motor that produces the same 128PS and 259Nm of torque, and the 1.4L 4-cylinder powertrain that produces 90PS and 220Nm of torque. Both the engines come mated with 6-speed manual transmission while the 1.6L can also be availed with 6-speed automatic.
In terms of performance, the diesel engines offer decent low speed torque and meaty mid-range offering good drivability. However, when it comes to top end torque, the performance start to suffer. But the mid-range just needs 2100rpm to traverse at 100kmph and overtaking at high speeds doesn’t need a downshift either. The 1.4L powered Creta can be primarily used in the city driving offering low speed and allowing you take upshift early. On the highways, this engine will run out of breath if you are cruising hard and going up to the 6th gear and revving hard would be exercise in futility. In terms of NVH levels, the Creta is a smooth car with excellent refinement levels so much so that you could get easily confuse as if it’s a petrol motor.
The petrol driven Creta on the other hand, features 1.6L dual VTVT engine produces 123PS and 151Nm of peak torque. Driving in the cities will plaster smile on your face especially when you are in the second or third gear as it gives enough power to effortlessly accelerate, if required. On the open stretches, you would definitely want the engine to spin around 2000rpm, a place of its highest ecstasy but there will be still enough power available for quick overtaking when there is a need.
Though Hyundai has not changed the engine, it has tuned the engine to derive 4 percent more fuel efficiency. The petrol variants of Creta are able to deliver ARAI certified 13kmpl while the diesel ones on the other hand, returns 17kmpl.

The ride quality in the Creta is quite sorted. The suspension seems to have been tuned to be very similar to the set up in the i20. Neither too rigid nor too pliant, the vehicle is composed over rough patches. Body roll is not too bothersome, though there is a bit of it evident when you put the car through tight corners. The NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) level has, however, been well contained with a number of additions such as the thicker dashboard panels, anti-vibration pads on the floor panel and optimised rigidity for the central floor tunnel. Steering feel is decent, though it not as precise as cars in the higher segment.

In terms of braking, there is ample stopping power on tap, however, the initial bite from the typical Hyundai’s perspective isn’t very sharp. The brakes in automatic Creta need to be stronger as their stopping capability isn’t confidence inspiring. Further, there are electronic aids such as ABS with EBD that further gives you command on the road.
In terms of safety, besides ABS and EBD, the new Creta comes equipped with dual airbags and day/night IRVM and lane change indicator as standard. After the Creta is introduced in the Brazilian market the facelift variant will be launched in India as well. Expect the facelift variant to draw most of its new styling inspiration from the Brazilian spec Creta.
