Recently we saw Maruti who is known for dominating the small car segment of the Country introduced the next generation Alto K10. The first generation Alto K10 was launched back in the year 2010 although was not a big seller like the Alto but was actually powered by a more powerful engine than the later. To spice things up Maruti has actually used the same Alto800 platform and added some new elements to the hatch without actually messing too much with the overall proportion of the Alto800. Nothing much has actually changed under the hood though the new hatch is still powered by the same 1 Litre K next engine which produces about 67 bhp of peak power at 6000 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. The engine has been mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard but it also comes with an optional 5 speed automatic transmission. Now the addition of the automatic gearbox surely will be a delight for many owners especially in the city traffic but along with the new transmission Maruti also has improved the overall fuel efficiency of the new hatch while Maruti also claims that the automatic transmission will provide almost same fuel efficiency as the manual transmission.
While talking about fuel efficiency Maruti claims that the same engine unit will now return a best in class fuel efficiency of 24.07kmpl which was made possible with few mechanical changes and upgrades to the engine and thus it now returns near about 15 percent more fuel efficiency than the previous gen hatch. The Alto K10 is also fast hatch and can accelerate from 0-60km/h mark in just 5.3 seconds.

On the short 70 kilometre drive the Alto showcased just how brilliant its ride quality is especially in urban areas over some rough roads. The gas-charged shock absorbers on a MacPherson strut assembly at the front and a 3-link rigid axle at the rear give it superb low speed absorption qualities. However, as the speed builds up and the corners get tighter or the surface undulating, you realise just how woefully inadequate this suspension is. There is a lot of body roll and you need to be able to react quickly enough to offset the suspension getting upset at being pushed hard around corners. The Maruti Suzuki Alto therefore is best experienced between the speeds of 60-80kmph and anything beyond is just asking it to perform over and above its station.
The steering too is reasonably precise at lower speeds with enough weight to give you a well connected feel but as you go faster it gets vague and the communication between steering wheel and tyres a bit disconnected.

The Maruti Alto K10 is definitely not the safest car in the Indian market, it only gets a driver side airbag at the front while there is no airbags provided for the front passenger which is quite shocking neither there is any optional ABS available with the hatch.

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Verdict
The Alto K10 is a move in the right direction by Maruti Suzuki. It has a lot of short comings, but the major flaw of the Alto has been answered, it is no more sluggish and never feels out of breath, something which the 800cc Alto could never boast about. It is the fastest car you can get at that price point and is economical too. The performance of the K10 motor very well makes up for all its short comings and if some one wants a pocket rocket, this is it. Add some good rubber and a few short comings of the Alto K10 will be resolved. There is truly no alternative to the Alto K10 and Maruti Suzuki have opened a new segment, the econo-hot hatch one.
