Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 Performance & Test Drive

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Overview

Recently we saw Maruti who is known for dominating the small car segment of the Country introduced the next generation Alto K10. The first generation Alto K10 was launched back in the year 2010 although was not a big seller like the Alto but was actually powered by a more powerful engine than the later. The Alto K10 was powered by a 998 cc K10 petrol engine and this car in particular attracted the attention of those customers who wanted a bigger engine which translates into more power and a slightly more premium looking hatch than the entry level Alto.

The next generation hatch which was launched recently is also pinned under the new Alto 800 platform but houses the same engine that used to power the previous generation hatch. The manufacturer claims that the engine has been tweaked to return better fuel efficiency figures while the other big change is the introduction of an optional automatic gearbox beside the standard 5 speed manual gearbox. The car beside all these mechanical changes also received a completely new look now that it is based on the new Alto800 Platform and not the previous generation Alto.Check for Car Loan Interest calculator.

What is even more interesting is the fact that the new budget hatch also becomes the cheapest car in the Indian market to be equipped with an automatic gearbox now that actually also becomes the grand USP of this hatch. So without any further due let us get straight into the other details of the recently launched Alto K10.

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Design

To spice things up Maruti has actually used the same Alto800 platform and added some new elements to the hatch without actually messing too much with the overall proportion of the Alto800. Some may like the idea while others might not atleast we can actually praise them for not applying Hyundai’s strategy of just installing the bigger engine in the same Eon hatch without any sort of cosmetic change.

Look at the new generation Alto K10 and you will certainly miss the old generation car for sure because although Maruti has tried their level best to push the design engineers at their working table but still somehow the new hatch fails to attract your second glance. Certain things are for sure the new K10 certainly looks beefier than the Alto800 and all that credits goes to the newly designed hood and those large swept back headlamp units, completely new grille which actually separates the nose from the chin of the car and also new darkened plastic surrounding the fog lamp units. Towards the side profile of the hatch you won’t notice any major change either and some might even mistake the car for an Alto800 however the only difference is the bigger rear view mirrors. While towards the rear the mildly redesigned tail lamps is the only change that you will actually notice beside the different badges.

Maruti also said that the Alto K10 sits on the same platform but it has shrunk in size while the height and width of the car has actually increased. The new generation Alto K10 may not be a stunner but it surely manages to look different and more premium than the standard Alto800.

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Cabin

The interior of the Maruti Alto K10 is totally fresh when compared to its 800cc sibling. The console and the dash has a black and beige tone with the instrument cluster having features like the USB option and aux input and a mp3 player. The buttons are big and clear and hence easy and convenient to use. This new centre console is a welcome after the old Alto 800 styling, which does look outdated.

The Maruti Alto K10 gets new rich beige fabric seats to add a pinch of richness in the cabin. The cabin space is sufficient and feels airy. The front row seats are comfortable for even long drives. In the second row there is sufficient kneeroom even for tall people and there is enough head room as well, but the thigh support could have been better. Check for Maruti Alto K10  in Changeonslapac

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Engine

Nothing much has actually changed under the hood though the new hatch is still powered by the same 1 Litre K next engine which produces about 67 bhp of peak power at 6000 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. The engine has been mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard but it also comes with an optional 5 speed automatic transmission. Now the addition of the automatic gearbox surely will be a delight for many owners especially in the city traffic but along with the new transmission Maruti also has improved the overall fuel efficiency of the new hatch while Maruti also claims that the automatic transmission will provide almost same fuel efficiency as the manual transmission.

While talking about fuel efficiency Maruti claims that the same engine unit will now return a best in class fuel efficiency of 24.07kmpl which was made possible with few mechanical changes and upgrades to the engine and thus it now returns near about 15 percent more fuel efficiency than the previous gen hatch. The Alto K10 is also fast hatch and can accelerate from 0-60km/h mark in just 5.3 seconds.

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Riding

On the short 70 kilometre drive the Alto showcased just how brilliant its ride quality is especially in urban areas over some rough roads. The gas-charged shock absorbers on a MacPherson strut assembly at the front and a 3-link rigid axle at the rear give it superb low speed absorption qualities. However, as the speed builds up and the corners get tighter or the surface undulating, you realise just how woefully inadequate this suspension is. There is a lot of body roll and you need to be able to react quickly enough to offset the suspension getting upset at being pushed hard around corners. The Maruti Suzuki Alto therefore is best experienced between the speeds of 60-80kmph and anything beyond is just asking it to perform over and above its station.

The steering too is reasonably precise at lower speeds with enough weight to give you a well connected feel but as you go faster it gets vague and the communication between steering wheel and tyres a bit disconnected.

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Safety

The Maruti Alto K10 is definitely not the safest car in the Indian market, it only gets a driver side airbag at the front while there is no airbags provided for the front passenger which is quite shocking neither there is any optional ABS available with the hatch.

Maruti Suzuki.Alto K10 Verdict

The Alto K10 is a move in the right direction by Maruti Suzuki. It has a lot of short comings, but the major flaw of the Alto has been answered, it is no more sluggish and never feels out of breath, something which the 800cc Alto could never boast about. It is the fastest car you can get at that price point and is economical too. The performance of the K10 motor very well makes up for all its short comings and if some one wants a pocket rocket, this is it. Add some good rubber and a few short comings of the Alto K10 will be resolved. There is truly no alternative to the Alto K10 and Maruti Suzuki have opened a new segment, the econo-hot hatch one.
