The Maruti Dzire 2018 is the best selling car in the country. The compact sedan selles more than any hatchback and has also beaten the Maruti Alto. In April, the Dzire sold 25,935 units, which is higher than 21,233 of the Maruti Alto. The Dzire still has a waiting period, though the production has gone up. Such is the demand for the car that the company is finding it hard to meet. The Dzire has always been the highest selling compact sedan. Despite competition from other manufacturers, this has been the favourite. The Honda Amaze will be launched soon and provide good competition to the Dzire. However it is to be seen if it can come close to its sales numbers.
The new Dzire is now much more premium than the earlier model. It is a much improved car as of now. It is now wider than before due to the new platform. Maruti Suzuki Dzire Exteriors
Despite its immense success, the older Dzire was never a looker. Much like most of its counterparts in the segment, it did come across as a hatchback that’s been stretched to look like a sedan. But with the new third-gen model, the Dzire has finally turned desirable – it’s fresh, contemporary and looks like a sedan from a segment above.
It’s also bigger in some ways – not in length but width which is up 40mm while wheelbase has increased by 20mm. The new Dzire sits lower with height reduced by 40mm and ground clearance reduced marginally from 170mm to 163mm. The changes have given the Dzire a more proportionate and sleeker stance. It’s not just purpose-built, it’s actually a handsome sedan which would’ve possibly looked even better had it not been for the length limitation.
At the front is a new pouty grille outlined by a thick layer of chrome. In some ways, it reminds us of the Fiat Punto Evo’s grille. Then there are those gorgeous LED projector headlamps with DRLs (daytime running lamps) – features usually seen in higher segments cars such as the Honda City but are now available in cars lower down like the Ignis. The thin, moustache-like chrome inserts under the fog lamps accentuate the front even further. Disappointingly, all these niceties including the new 15-inch “precision-cut” alloys are available only in the top-end variants. The lower V variant gets functional 14-inch steel wheels with cover.
The rear has been kept simple with a thin chrome strip running across the length of the boot merging with the taillamps that are now LED units. The boot also looks a lot better integrated and doesn’t feel slapped on forcefully to make it fall under sub 4-metre. There’s more space to carry your luggage with boot space increased by 62 litres to 378 litres. It’s still lesser than rivals Tata Tigor, Hyundai Xcent and Honda Amaze, all of which have over 400 litres of cargo space. However, it’s large enough to pack some big bags and camera equipment (check picture gallery for reference).
The insides of the car are as fresh as the exterior. The beige and black theme continues but the design is all new. Plastics are hard and quality isn’t too different from the outgoing car; in fact, several bits seem to be directly lifted from there. However, some bits feel really nice. The flat-bottom steering wheel, for example, looks and feels incredible; even the buttons on it are of high quality. The instrument console looks crisp and the needles at zero-degree position, like the Ignis, feel sporty. The new front seats are supportive and comfy, and the cushioning feels a bit softer than before.
There’s ample height adjustment for the driver’s seat, and the steering gets tilt adjustment too. Ergonomics on the whole are agreeable, and there are a good amount of storage areas around as well. The audio system integration, however, feels like an after-thought and doesn’t gel well with the design. Also, the wood insert on the dashboard might pass of as being classy at first glance, but look closely and it feels a bit low grade. Then, there’s the inside mirror which is small and the large front neck restraints hinder visibility. The front passenger footwell eats into the legroom, resulting in a slightly off-centre seating position.
This new Dzire has a longer wheelbase of 2,450mm and, as a result, legroom has improved at the back. Two tall people can sit one behind another in reasonable comfort. However, headroom for taller occupants at the back is very tight. Despite being much wider than before and than the competition too, a third occupant at the back will be a tight squeeze. What’s nice is that there are air-con vents and a 12V power socket at the back now. The Dzire’s boot has grown in size too, measuring a far more respectable 378 litres, and it is practically shaped too. The loading lip, though, is still a bit high.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire Performance
The new Maruti Dzire 2018 makes use of the same engines that powered the earlier model. There is no change in the power and torque figures of the engines. The petrol engine is the 1.2-litre K-series engine that has four cylinders and a power output of 83bhp. The torque is 115Nm for this engine. This is a sufficiently powerful engine and offers brisk performance in the city and on the highway.It is a good thing that Maruti has stuck to this engine, because we feel that currently it is the best performing petrol engine in its segment. The diesel engine also has good performance. The car is light in weight, hence performance becomes even better. The good amount of torque helps achieve good driveability also. This is quite a peppy engine too. It has a 1.3-litre DDiS, four-cylinder diesel engine making 75bhp of power and 190Nm of maximum torque. It does get a bit noisy at higher RPMs, but offers good drivability and performance.The AMT on the diesel of the Swift Dzire could have been better tuned. While both engines are offered with AMT, our pick is the petrol one. It is a smooth performer and has better drivability that the diesel. The AMT option is not available on the base version which are Lxi and Ldi.
The Swift Dzire 2018 has always been up there, when it comes to fuel efficiency. The New Dzire has now shed around 100 kilograms, hence it has got even better now. The reduced weight has resulted in better mileage as well as better performance. This makes it the Swift Dzire most fuel-efficient car in the country with an economy of 28.4 km/l. Petrol has also seen an increase in its mileage to 22km/l, for both manual and AMT versions.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire Driving
If there’s one thing about the Dzire that’s completely bowled us over, it’s the ride quality. The suspension is so silent, the ride so plush, and it may sound like a big statement but there’s possibly nothing that unsettles this sedan. We went over some really rough and broken roads but the Dzire’s suspension absorbed them all without any thuds or rattles, especially the AMT variants. There’s none of the bounciness in the rear that used to be felt in the older Dzire. Despite the ground clearance having gone down by 7mm, the Dzire went over speed bumps without grazing its underbody. If comfort is high on your priority, then the Dzire’s got your back.
On straight roads, and at speeds up to 100kmph, the Dzire feels stable, it’s 186/65 tyres offering a rock solid grip. But it doesn’t offer the same level of confidence in corners. The steering wheel weighs up adequately when driving at lower speeds. As you gather pace, though, it tends to lighten up a bit making you unsure about what the front wheels are doing. The brakes are responsive and get the job done but panic braking situations are best avoided.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire Safety
The safety features on offer include dual airbags, ABS with EBD and even brake assist. There is also ISOFIX on all the variants, which makes it a good option to consider. The other features on offer include the front seat belt with pre-tensioners, immobilizer, force limiter, seat belt warning lamps. Key left warning and door open warning are a part of this list.
In the V variant, the additional features are day and night adjustable IRVM, speed sensitive door locking and anti-theft security system.

Maruti, as ever, has its fingers on the pulse of the Indian market, and this new Dzire is tailor-made to cater to the demands and needs of customers. It’s got all the right ingredients – space, practicality, comfort, good equipment on top variants, fuel-efficient engines and, above everything, the backing of Maruti’s extensive sales and support network. Also, the inclusion of ABS with EBD, and dual airbags as standard across the range is an excellent move that’s sure to go down well with increasingly safety-conscious Indians. With a wide introductory price range of Rs 5.45-9.41 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), there should be a Dzire variant for everyone. There’s little doubt then, despite the rise of the compact SUV, and doubts about the longevity of this segment in the light of the upcoming GST implementation, that Maruti seems to have another blockbuster on its hands.
